Phil Spencer on multiplatform approach: "There's no need to limit any game"
Phil Spencer from Microsoft has shared developments in Xbox's evolving brand, highlighting a focus on making first-party games accessible on various platforms.
During a conversation with independent games journalist Destin Legarie, covered by Eurogamer, Spencer discussed Xbox's shift from exclusive titles like Starfield and Indiana Jones.
Spencer remarked, "There's no reason to restrict any game from reaching where it can have success both with players and commercially. Our aim is to make our games accessible."
He further mentioned, "Game Pass plays a key role on our platform but excluding games from other systems doesn't align with our objectives."
Microsoft's vision for Xbox is to facilitate the availability of major games across "numerous places," said Spencer.
"This strategy sets us apart," Spencer continued. "Other platforms tend to focus on a single device, whether it's PC, mobile, or console, whereas Xbox is about offering creators opportunities across all screens people choose to play on."
When questioned about the evolution of Xbox's brand identity, Spencer noted that it is continuously transforming to keep up with industry trends.
He emphasized, "Ensuring that your Xbox game library is accessible in diverse locations is an evolution of our brand identity—one that the industry needs to embrace."
Spencer added, "With current industry challenges, expanding game accessibility should be a top priority for everyone."
In another discussion on Gamertag Radio, Spencer expressed Microsoft's intentions to bring Xbox titles to the Nintendo Switch 2.
Spencer stated, "I'm eager to work with [Nintendo] on delivering our games, since they're an integral part of this sector."
As part of this multiplatform direction, Microsoft announced last February their plans to release four games on other consoles, according to GamesIndustry.biz.
Spencer noted, "We can enhance Xbox without detriment and leverage what other platforms offer to grow our business. Introducing Xbox franchises on additional platforms aims to pique player interest in Xbox. There's inherent brand value for us in this approach."
