The remaster of the cult visual novel Fate/stay night has sold 100,000 copies
Visual novels sell well, too. The Japanese publisher Aniplex boasted about the results of the Fate/stay night remaster. The game has been purchased over 100,000 times since its release in August of this year. This figure represents the combined sales of the game on Steam and the Nintendo Switch platform.
Unfortunately, it's not advisable to use these numbers as a benchmark. There are two main reasons for this:
- Firstly, this is not the original game, but a remaster;
- Secondly, the game itself has a cult status.
Fate/stay night was released in 2004 as an "adult game with a well-developed plot." In the same year, it was recognized by one of the Japanese retailers as the most popular visual novel in history.
Quite quickly, the game shed its "adult content" and got a version for a broader audience. Following that, in 2006, it received its first anime adaptation.
Today, Fate is a large and recognizable franchise. The number of series, manga, novels, and even games, including all spin-offs, is in the dozens (just the anime works are almost 30 pieces). Some of them have achieved phenomenal success.
For example, the mobile battler Fate/Grand Order, also published by Aniplex, according to AppMagic, has earned $4.7 billion since its release in 2015 with 18 million installations. Against this backdrop, the success of the remaster that spawned the series does not seem as significant.
