Koei Tecmo Executive: Game company executives should also be producers

At the G-Star 2024 expo in South Korea, the founder and CEO of Koei Tecmo, Yoichi Erikawa, shared that all executive directors in his company also hold positions as producers. He believes this is beneficial both for the games and for the top managers themselves.

According to Erikawa, game producers need to have as much influence on a project as film producers. They should have control over the team, budget, schedule, and, as a result, the quality of the game. These capabilities are usually present in executive directors.

Previously, Koei Tecmo announced its intention to pay more attention to developing AAA games and regularly releasing major titles for PC and consoles. Currently, a significant portion of the gaming division's revenue comes from mobile. During the financial half-year from April to September 2024, mobile games earned 21.8 billion yen ($141.5 million), accounting for 58.6% of its revenue. To accomplish its plan, Koei Tecmo aims to double its staff in the long term—from 2,500 to 5,000 employees.

The current pipeline at Koei Tecmo includes games like Fairy Tail 2, Dynasty Warriors: Origins, and Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land.
