Merlin Entertainments plans to allocate more than $110 million toward attractions themed around Minecraft
Microsoft has signed an agreement with Merlin Entertainments, a UK-based operator, to develop Minecraft-themed experiences, including attractions, themed hotel rooms, and retail outlets in both the UK and US.
According to The Guardian, Merlin plans to spend over $110 million on the initial two attractions, which are slated to open in the UK and US in 2026 and 2027, respectively.
These new ventures will be integrated into existing theme parks or city locations. Following these openings, Microsoft and Merlin intend to further expand their collaboration worldwide.
"We are everywhere digitally, Merlin is everywhere physically," noted Kayleen Walters, Microsoft's vice president of franchise development. "It's about how do we expand Minecraft beyond the game."
She further explained that while Mojang and Microsoft have expertise with Minecraft and its branding, Merlin brings a wealth of experience in creating physical location-based experiences, with a unified vision guiding the collaboration.
Scott O'Neil, chief executive of Merlin Entertainments, remarked, "When seeking partners, we focus on alignment of people, scale, and community. We've collaborated with leading brands such as Lego and Peppa Pig. Now, with Minecraft, the number one video game, we have another exciting partnership."
He emphasized that transforming Minecraft into a real-world experience is a significant endeavor, marking the beginning of expansive goals.
This isn't the first time a gaming franchise has been incorporated into theme parks. Nintendo teamed up with Universal in 2015 to launch Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan in 2021.
Moreover, in 2016, Universal announced plans for Nintendo-themed sections at US locations. In early 2023, Super Nintendo World debuted at Universal Studios Hollywood, and another will be introduced at Epic Universal in Orlando next year.
