Roblox enhances its safety measures and parental control features
Roblox has revealed updates to their safety protocols and enhanced parental control measures to safeguard young users below the age of 13.
The changes, effective immediately, involve the enhancement of remote control by parents, revised communication options, and the introduction of content descriptors for experiences.
Parents can now remotely monitor and adjust their child's account settings, including spending restrictions and screen time management.
They can also review their child's friends and oversee chat feature access. Users under 13 are barred from using direct messaging within platform chats and are restricted in the type of communication they can have in games.
The newly introduced content labels will substitute previous experience guidelines, highlighting what types of content are available. By default, users under nine have access only to content rated as minimal or mild, requiring parental permission for moderate material.
Content marked as restricted will stay inaccessible to younger users until they reach 17 years old or older.
These measures are endorsed by organizations like the National Association for Media Literacy Education and the Family Online Safety Institute, collaborating with Roblox.
Matt Kaufman, Roblox's chief safety officer, stated, "As our platform expands, our commitment to safety must advance accordingly. Today's developments mark a significant step in that journey."
He continued, "This is the outcome of extensive product development and consultations with safety experts, encompassing over 30 new safety enhancements this year as we aim to maintain a secure and respectful environment for play."
Family Online Safety CEO Stephan Balkam commented, "As parents strive to be more involved in their children's digital activities, Roblox's enhanced parental controls provide significant progress."
He added, "With strong tools for discreet oversight and privacy, Roblox equips families with assurance for a safer online experience."
Roblox began implementing these safety feature upgrades last month, announcing the changes to chat and content regulations as well as the introduction of a new type of parental account.
The company further enhanced safety features last week, introducing measures like moderating unrated experiences and limiting access to social gatherings and unregulated user-generated content.
