The Splinter Cell movie project by Ubisoft has been canceled
The Splinter Cell movie project from Ubisoft has been officially canceled, as disclosed by producer Basil Iwanyk.
According to details provided to The Direct, Iwanyk, who joined the project in 2013, has announced the cessation of its development. He remarked, "The concept was fantastic... but difficulties with the script and budget prevailed." Iwanyk described the film as a missed opportunity, noting they entertained numerous versions that promised to be "hardcore and awesome."
The Splinter Cell film has been mired in uncertainty since its 2012 announcement. At one point, Variety revealed that Tom Hardy was tapped to play the lead role of Sam Fisher. In 2014, Doug Liman, known for Edge of Tomorrow, was mentioned as a potential director, but further production updates have been absent since.
Despite the film adaptation's cancellation, a Netflix anime series inspired by the franchise is underway, slated for a 2025 release. Additionally, in 2022, BBC Radio 4 aired Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Firewall, an eight-part audio drama based on the series.
