The recent shutdowns of Firewalk Studios and Neon Koi have drawn criticism from the Communication Workers of America (CWA), particularly targeting Sony's role in these closures.

As conveyed by Game Developer, the CWA argues that the closures exemplify how insulated executives in the gaming sector are compromising worker security by reducing job stability.

The union also argued that the decision to cease operations at Neon Koi was part of Sony's strategy to enhance its market dominance in gaming.

The CWA criticized Sony for shutting down studios outside of its PlayStation-exclusive framework rather than participating in the more varied and competitive mobile game industry, viewing it as a sign of Sony's intent to consolidate its monopoly in the gaming field.

The union declared it intends to discuss the anti-competitive effects of Sony's growing market influence with relevant antitrust authorities, lawmakers, and industry stakeholders.

Emphasizing its view on collective bargaining, the labor union stated that such negotiations not only secure fair pay for employees but also provide them a say regarding job cut impacts.

Sony's decision to close Firewalk Studios and Neon Koi, announced on October 29, was justified by Sony Studio Business Group CEO Herman Hulst, who noted that the company assessed its game portfolio and project statuses to align with both short and long-term business goals.
