Sony closes down Neon Koi and Firewalk Studios
Sony announced the closure of Neon Koi and Firewalk Studios.
In a communication to Sony's personnel, Hermen Hulst, CEO of the Studio Business Group at Sony Interactive Entertainment, mentioned that the decision to close the studios followed a comprehensive review of their games portfolio and project progress. The aim was to ensure alignment with both immediate and strategic business objectives.
Regarding Neon Koi, Hulst emphasized that although mobile gaming remains a key area for growth, a focus on creating games that align with PlayStation Studios' standards and can engage a broader player base globally is necessary.
For Firewalk Studios, extensive deliberations over several months led to the conclusion that discontinuing their game and closing the studio is the most viable option.
While the exact number of affected employees is uncertain, Firewalk is listed as having 51-200 staff on LinkedIn, and Neon Koi has 11-50.
"This news is difficult, particularly as it involves the departure of valued colleagues and friends," Hulst noted. "After careful consideration, we believe these decisions will ultimately strengthen our organization."
He added that Neon Koi and Firewalk housed numerous talented individuals and that efforts would be made to find alternative roles for impacted staff within Sony's global studio network where feasible.
Hulst concluded by expressing optimism about the future, highlighting upcoming developments from the Studio Business Group and associated teams, and reaffirming confidence in Sony's ability to deliver remarkable gaming experiences.
