The International Federation of Actors has announced its backing for the SAG-AFTRA strike
The SAG-AFTRA video game strike has gained backing from the International Federation of Actors (FIA). This organization, which represents performers from more than 60 nations, expressed unanimous support during a meeting in New Zealand earlier this month.
A joint resolution was introduced by the Actors' Equity Association, ACTRA of Canada, and Equity UK, as well as unions from Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa, and Uruguay.
The resolution underscores the issues pointed out by SAG-AFTRA, focusing on the use of artificial intelligence, which threatens performers' livelihoods by potentially replicating their voices and likenesses without proper consent or compensation.
The FIA pledged to provide "all legally permissible support for as long as needed" in support of the strike.
It emphasized opposition to corporate exploitation and the unchecked use of AI. Additionally, the FIA highlighted their commitment to fighting for fair wages, safe working conditions, and the protection of performers' rights.
FIA president Gabrielle Carteris remarked, "The struggle for workers' empowerment must match the global scale of the corporations profiting from our labor. Therefore, the FIA's backing of SAG-AFTRA represents necessary solidarity."
"Our collective strength signifies global support for dignified working environments for performing artists everywhere," Carteris continued.
Dominick Luquer, FIA's general secretary, commented, "Workers' challenges cross borders, and our federation's members are fully aware of this. We are proud to stand in unity with SAG-AFTRA and are hopeful for a swift yet equitable resolution to the strike."
The video game strike by SAG-AFTRA was initiated on July 26 following negotiations with companies like Activision, Electronic Arts, Disney, WB Games, and Take 2 Productions that lasted nearly 18 months.
The FIA reported that more than 100 games have joined SAG-AFTRA's Interim Agreement and Tiered Budget Independent Agreement, arrangements offering protections against AI and improved working conditions as pursued by SAG-AFTRA in negotiations.
