According to Circana, 71% of Americans participate in video gaming activities
A recent study from Circana, titled the 2024 Gamer Segmentation Report, reveals that 71% of Americans engage in video gaming.
This survey, which spanned May to June 2024 and included 5,100 participants, indicated there are now 236.4 million gamers in the United States.
The report highlights that the demographic with the most gamers, making up 37%, is adults aged 45 and over. This trend is largely attributed to women gamers and increased interest in consoles.
Although engagement among those under 12 has diminished by 6% since 2022, this age group remains critically significant for the gaming industry.
Regarding financial investment, the average expenditure on video games over the past six months was $56.20 per person. Notably, 46% of respondents reported they did not spend on gaming products.
Additionally, U.S. gamers dedicate roughly 14.5 hours weekly to gaming. They typically utilize at least three devices, with 65% playing on mobile, and over a third using PCs and consoles.
Mat Piscatella from Circana comments, "During the pandemic, there was a notable increase in casual players who took up gaming when public activities were paused. However, many have since stepped back as normal life resumed."
Piscatella further remarks that despite a reduction in the general player numbers, the most passionate gamers have persisted, investing more time and finances in gaming. Adjusting to this evolved and mature market landscape is crucial to prevent future downward trends.
