Riot Games "removes" 32 roles in League of Legends
Update: Riot Games communicated to GamesIndustry.biz regarding 27 reductions in its League team, along with five additional job cuts in its "publishing side."
The original announcement follows.
Original story: Riot Games disclosed it has "made the tough decision to eliminate some roles."
Co-founder Marc Merrill addressed League of Legends players via a post on X/Twitter, reassuring them that development on the beloved game continues at pace.
Merrill emphasized, "This isn’t about reducing headcount to save money – it’s about making sure we have the right expertise so that League continues to be great for another 15 years and beyond."
He added that while team efficiency is more critical than its size, the League team is expected to expand as they embark on future developments. For those laid off, the company is offering severance with a minimum of six months' salary, an annual bonus, job placement support, health benefits, and additional assistance.
Merrill expressed "full confidence" in Andrei van Roon, head of the League studio, and executive producer Paul Bellezza. He said the leadership has reshaped teams and operations to enhance both current and future experiences for players.
The exact number of affected staff remains unspecified.
Earlier this year, Riot reduced its workforce by 11%, equating to 530 jobs.
