Hi-Rez Studios announces plans to reduce its workforce as part of a "difficult but necessary change"
Hi-Rez Studios is undergoing an "internal reorganisation and reprioritisation," which has resulted in layoffs within several teams across the company.
CEO Stewart Chisam did not specify the exact number of employees affected, but indicated that the marketing and publishing sectors would bear the brunt of the job cuts.
The layoffs also touch teams in Evil Mojo, G&A, and Titan Forge, impacting developers who focus on "cosmetic skin content and system features."
Chisam explained that these "difficult but necessary changes" are intended to secure "Hi-Rez's long-term success," with a strategic emphasis on ensuring a sustainable future for SMITE 2. These decisions followed a "comprehensive review of our strategy and operations."
Addressing the situation, Chisam acknowledged the real impact of these changes, highlighting the dedication and talent of those leaving: "Each impacted individual is a talented and dedicated professional who has poured their heart and soul into our games," he stated.
"The decision to let them go was heartbreaking and reflects a shortcoming in my leadership, for which I accept full responsibility. These individuals have all made positive contributions to the company; this should not be seen as their personal failing. I offer my deepest gratitude for their efforts in bringing joy to our gaming community."
The studio intends to "focus entirely" on the development of Smite 2 moving forward.
"Although these changes are tough, we believe they are essential for a stronger future," Chisam stated. "We appreciate your continued support and understanding during this challenging time and thank those employees who have given their passion and time to our community."
Previously, in June 2023, fewer than 30 employees were laid off during another phase of Hi-Rez's restructuring.
Today's news comes on the heels of another report that XR Games is also undergoing significant restructuring, putting many jobs at risk.
Additionally, Sharkmob's London studio is facing staff reductions following a project cancellation, resulting in several positions being threatened.
