In August, Grand Theft Auto 5 has reclaimed the top spot on the European Monthly Charts
In August, 11.8 million video games were sold throughout Europe for consoles and PCs, marking a 7% increase compared to last year.
This growth is reported by GSD, which compiles digital sales from most prominent publishers and physical sales in key European regions.
The surge in sales is attributed to discounts and promotions on older titles, notably including August’s chart-topper: Grand Theft Auto 5 (sales rose 5.7% compared to last year). Additionally, the debut of Star Wars Outlaws secured it as the second highest-selling title in August.
However, Black Myth: Wukong's digital sales are not reflected in the charts largely, with its physical release only reaching 68th place.
Ubisoft's major Star Wars release had a lackluster start, with initial sales trailing significantly behind EA's Star Wars Jedi: Survivor's launch in 2023 but still outperforming 2020’s Star Wars Squadrons (also by EA).
Kingdom Come Deliverance made a notable leap to fourth place after a price drop below £3 on Steam, while Borderlands 3 climbed the rankings following movie releases and the announcement of Borderlands 4.
Sony's new release, Concord, struggled for an audience, eventually being withdrawn. It was ranked 347th in Europe for August, positioned as the 13th best-selling new game of the month. Its performance lagged behind Nintendo's Emio: The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club, which also doesn't count digital sales.
Regarding hardware, over 300,000 gaming consoles were sold in tracked European areas, a 42% drop from last August, although this is a 12% increase compared to July figures.
The PS5 maintained its lead as the top console, despite a year-on-year sales reduction of more than 50%, followed by the Nintendo Switch in second with a 25% decline since last August. Overall, console sales across tracked regions are down 29% year-to-year.
In the accessories sector, 1.1 million units were sold, experiencing a decrease of more than 17% from the previous year.
