GTA V has appeared in more than 800 academic papers
Scientists from all over the world periodically conduct research related to video games. Theoretical physicist and science popularizer Marat Khumadev decided to examine how often GTA V is mentioned in studies. As it turned out — quite frequently.
GTA V
For his analysis, Khumadev referred to the bibliographic catalog OpenAlex. He found that by mid-September 2024, at least 743 articles, dissertations, and other scientific works in various languages had been published mentioning the title "Grand Theft Auto V." In an additional 131 publications, the game was referred to as "Grand Theft Auto 5."
Khumadev noted that although 11 years have passed since the release of GTA V, the number of academic works mentioning the game has only been increasing in recent years.
As Khumadev indicated, researchers in social sciences most frequently engaged with GTA V. For instance, it was used to examine the impact of aggressive games on human behavior. However, scholars in the technical sciences also worked extensively with GTA V. Notably, it was used to adjust autonomous vehicles, train neural networks, and solve tasks related to computer vision.
