GTA V has been featured in over 800 scientific papers
Scientists around the world periodically conduct research related to video games. Theoretical physicist and science popularizer Marat Khmadeev decided to investigate how often GTA V is mentioned in such studies. As it turns out — quite frequently.
GTA V
For his analysis, Khmadeev referred to the OpenAlex bibliographic catalog. He found that by mid-September 2024, there were at least 743 articles, dissertations, and other scientific works in various languages that mentioned the title "Grand Theft Auto V." In another 131 publications, the game was referred to as "Grand Theft Auto 5."
Khmadeev noted that although 11 years have passed since the release of GTA V, the number of scientific works mentioning the game has only been increasing in recent years.
As Khmadeev pointed out, researchers working in social sciences most frequently engaged with GTA V. For example, it has been used to examine the impact of aggressive games on human behavior. However, scientists in the field of technical sciences also actively worked with GTA V. Specifically, it has been used to calibrate drones, train neural networks, and address challenges related to computer vision.
