Australia has rolled out new "mandatory classifications" for games that feature "gambling-like" content
Authorities in Australia have announced the implementation of new "mandatory classifications" targeted at video games featuring "gambling-like" elements.
Vooks brought attention to this update, which was further covered by Eurogamer.net. As of September 22, games with simulated gambling activities will be "legally restricted to adults," receiving an automatic R 18+ rating at minimum.
There is also a new regulation for games that incorporate in-game purchases with "elements of chance," such as loot boxes, absent gambling imagery, which will now carry a minimum M rating, indicating it is not suitable for those under 15.
While the "mature" classification serves as guidance, the R 18+ rating prohibits the sale or distribution to those under 18. These updates affect games on PCs, consoles, phones, and tablets.
The recent regulation will not impact games that feature casino settings without allowing player interaction with gambling.
Games rated prior to September 22 remain unaffected unless modified or due for reclassification. However, previously released titles can be reassessed if they integrate "gambling-like" downloadable content.
Furthermore, if pre-existing or newly added loot boxes change in already launched games, they will need to undergo reclassification per the new standards.
Correction: Initially, this article combined the R 18+ rule for games with gambling imagery with the M rule. These are distinct regulations, and the text has been updated to clarify this.
