Zynga lost a patent dispute worth $45 million
The International Business Machines (IBM) company convinced a U.S. jury that several games by mobile publisher Zynga infringed its patent rights related to web communications.
Farmville 3
The games in question are Farmville 2 and 3, Crosswords With Friends, CSR Racing 2, Empires and Puzzles, Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells, Hit It Rich!, and Wizard of Oz Slots.
The legal proceedings between IBM and Zynga lasted two and a half years. IBM filed the lawsuit in the spring of 2022, claiming that Zynga intentionally borrowed the company's technologies for its games, as it did not want to spend time developing its own solutions.
Now, Zynga must pay IBM $44.9 million in compensation.
Zynga disagrees with the court's verdict. In a comment to Reuters, a Zynga representative stated that IBM's patents are outdated, and therefore it did not infringe anything. The company is currently preparing to file an appeal.
