In South Korea, there are plans to require foreign gaming companies to collaborate with local partners

At the end of August, South Korean authorities approved a new amendment to the gambling law, reports ZDNET Korea. It requires foreign gaming companies that distribute their titles in the country to find local partners.

Officials believe this requirement will better regulate the Korean gaming market. For instance, it will make it harder for foreign publishers and developers to circumvent the loot box law and other rules enacted in South Korea.

How exactly the authorities will enforce compliance with the requirement is not disclosed.

The amendment was first proposed to be included in the gambling law in the summer of 2023. As reported by another Korean portal, GameMeca, at the time, it was assumed that it would apply only to companies with a revenue and user count in games above a certain level. It was also noted that as an alternative to finding a local partner, opening an office in South Korea could be a solution.
