The creators of 80 video games have entered agreements with SAG-AFTRA.
The performers' trade union, SAG-AFTRA, has successfully negotiated deals with the creators of 80 forthcoming video games as it continues its campaign for improved working conditions, emphasizing protection against AI exploitation.
The union highlighted that several developers have entered into either tiered-budget or interim agreements, some of whom were not originally involved in the strike. Among the studios now part of these agreements are Studio Wildcard, known for ARK Survival Evolved, indie developer Little Bat Games, which is working on Vampire Therapist, and Francisco Gonzales, who has created retro-style adventure games like Rosewater and Lamplight City.
Recently, SAG-AFTRA reported its initial contract with Lightspeed LA, a subsidiary of Tencent, famous for its upcoming open-world sci-fi title, Last Sentinel. The union expressed gratitude towards the video game companies that are opting into these agreements. Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the union's national executive director and chief negotiator, praised them for acknowledging the value of human creativity in gaming.
The union members commenced their strike in July following unsuccessful negotiations that persisted for 18 months. Their demands include assurances that their voices will not be altered or imitated using AI technologies.
Previously, SAG-AFTRA's discussions involved a bargaining group that included major industry players like Activision, Blindlight, Disney, Electronic Arts, Formosa Interactive, Insomnia, Llama Productions, Take-Two Productions, VoiceWorks Productions, and WB Games. Crabtree-Ireland remarked that the agreeable companies demonstrate that the union's terms regarding AI are sensible and sustainable for the industry, contradicting the stance of the bargaining group.
