Andrew C. Greenberg, known for his role as co-creator of the Wizardry gaming series, has passed away at the age of 67

Andrew C. Greenberg, known for co-developing the storied video game Wizardry, has passed away at the age of 67.

The announcement was shared via Facebook by Robert Woodhead, a longtime collaborator of Greenberg. This news was initially reported by PC Gamer.

Greenberg and Woodhead partnered to launch the pioneering RPG, Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord, in 1981. The game was notable for featuring a team of characters, each with distinct abilities that players had to manage strategically during gameplay.

In a tribute post, shared alongside two nostalgic images — one depicting the introduction screen of Wizardry and the other showcasing both developers in the 1980s — Woodhead expressed his loss: "It is with great sadness that I mark the passing of my dear friend, the Evil Wizard Wedna."

The character of the Mad Overlord in the game was named Wedna, a reversal of Andrew's name.

The influence of Wizardry is significant in the RPG genre, inspiring notable titles such as Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy, and Dragon Quest.
