This year's Key Facts Report has been published by Video Game Europe together with the European Games Developer Federation (EGDF), offering a thorough overview of the video game industry in Europe for 2023.

Key insights from the report include the following statistics:

  • Adults account for 75% of video game enthusiasts in Europe, with an average age of 31.4.
  • 53% of the European population engages in video gaming.
  • The workforce across Europe has seen a 6.7% growth, reaching close to 115,000 individuals.
  • There has been a 5% rise in revenue, accumulating to €25.7 billion ($28.7 billion) across France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK.
  • Women now represent 24.4% of the workforce, marking a 1.3% increase.

The study also reviewed gaming habits since the previous year. It found that 46% are PC gamers (a decrease of 2%), 56% use consoles (down by 3%), and 68% play on smartphones or tablets (a drop of 1%).

Notably, playtime has remained stable over the past twelve years.

Revenue sources by device include:

  • Consoles: 41% (a 1% decline compared to 2022)
  • Smartphones/Tablets: 41% (down by 1% from 2022)
  • PCs: 14% (an increase of 2% from last year)
  • On-demand/Streaming services: 3% (unchanged from 2022)

Hester Woodliffe, chair of Video Games Europe, commented, "Our new report highlights the growth and vibrancy of the European games sector, driven by an engaged player base."

Woodliffe emphasized the need for EU Member States to develop robust long-term strategies for talent development, targeting the skills gap, supporting educators, and encouraging female participation in STEAM programs. Investing in training and game education policies is crucial for sustaining competitiveness and success.

Hendrik Lesser, president of EGDF, added, "Investing in nurturing intellectual property and unlocking the full potential of European game industry SMEs through innovation, start-up and production support will drive further growth. This will help unlock innovation and respect the importance of the role of SMEs within the European game development infrastructure."
