Ubisoft confirms Assassin’s Creed Infinity — live service game led by one of Splinter Cell creators

It’s been officially revealed that Ubisoft has started to work on Assassin’s Creed Infinity. It’ll probably be a live service platform that will define the franchise’s future. One of the original Splinter Cell creators will creatively lead the project.

The first news about Assassin’s Creed Infinity appeared on July 7 in Jason Schreier’s report for Bloomberg. A few sources from the company shared details about the upcoming project.

Here’s what Schreier has found out:

  • Assassin’s Creed Infinity is described as “a massive online platform that evolves over time,” similar to GTA Online and Fortnite;
  • Infinity might include multiple games with different gameplay mechanics and historical settings. However, they will be all connected to each other;
  • With the upcoming project, Ubisoft probably will revise its strategy of releasing new games in the Assassin’s Creed franchise every year or two. Instead, the company will produce new content for “some sort of hub that allows people to play multiple AC games both big and small”;
  • According to Schreier, Infinity won’t come out until 2024 or even later. Due to the fact that the project is being developed by studios in Quebec and Montreal, which are responsible for the franchise, there won’t be new games in the series until Infinity is released.

A few hours after the Bloomberg report, Ubisoft officially confirmed Assassin’s Creed Infinity on its website. According to the statement, the company knows that the “decisions we’re making for the franchise now will impact its future for years to come.”

Ubisoft didn’t confirm or deny the information about Infinity being a live service platform. Although the company didn’t go into much detail, it revealed people who will be in charge of Assassin’s Creed Infinity.

A new cross-studio formed on the base of Ubisoft’s Montreal and Quebec offices will be led by Marc-Alexis Côté who worked on the franchise since Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood.

Jonathan Dumont and Clint Hocking will serve as creative directors. Hocking started his career in Ubisoft in 2001 when he was the level designer, game designer, and writer of the original Splinter Cell. He also was the creative director of Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory and Watch Dogs: Legion.
