The Russian smartphone market is dominated by Android
The expert project Hi-Tech.Mail.Ru and the company IDC conducted a study on the Russian smartphone market in the first quarter of 2013. According to the results, the share of devices based on Android in shipments grew from 39.7% to 70.9% over the year.
Notably, in the first quarter of 2013, the share of iOS slightly decreased (from 9% to 8.4%), while Windows Phone increased (from 5.1% to 8.3%) compared to the same period last year, making their shares almost equal.
According to Dmitry Ryabinin, chief analyst at Hi-Tech.Mail.Ru, the main consumer expectations from new versions of Android are related to energy optimization. As battery life improves, the growth in share will continue.
As for the most common versions of Android in Russia, Gingerbread (2.3) remains the undisputed leader. It is installed on 45.9% of devices, although its share has decreased from 66.5% last year. The latest OS version, Jelly Bean (4.1), is currently running on 15% of devices.
