Baldur's Gate 3 has received a Hugo Award
The Hugo Awards have honored Baldur’s Gate 3 with the accolade for Best Game or Interactive Work.
This marks only the second occasion a video game has received this recognition, following Hades, which was the inaugural recipient in 2021 when the category was introduced provisionally. The award was solidified as a permanent category last year, as noted by PC Gamer.
Competing against other notable nominees such as Alan Wake 2, Dredge, Chants of Sennaar, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Baldur’s Gate 3 emerged victorious.
The announcements took place during Worldcon on Sunday, August 11, in Glasgow.
During his acceptance speech, Swen Vincke, the founder of Larian Studios, remarked, "I'm very grateful that you created this award and category." He highlighted the challenges of video game writing, emphasizing, "It's very, very, very hard work."
Vincke elaborated on the game’s complexity: "For Baldur's Gate 3, we had to create over 174 hours of cinematics to reflect the players' choices and ensure each had an emotionally resonant story."
He further acknowledged the efforts required, stating, "It takes a very long time, it takes a very large team [...] It takes a lot of perseverance and a lot of talent. So I'm very happy for all of them and for all of the team back home that we can get this, and very grateful to the fandom."
