The Sustainable Games Alliance is calling for the gaming industry to "become sustainable"
Veterans from the gaming sector have established the Sustainable Games Alliance, a non-profit aimed at promoting sustainability within the video game industry.
Supported by influential figures such as David Helgason, the founder of Unity Technologies, and Petri Järvilehto, co-founder of Remedy, this organization is managed by co-founder Maria Wagner. Their mission focuses on transforming gaming into a leading sustainable entertainment form through initiatives that help the industry better understand and reduce its environmental impact.
In pursuit of its goals, the Alliance is crafting a free, open, and international standard for sustainability reporting. This standard aims to ease compliance with significant regulations like the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) and the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).
Dr. Ben Abraham, the author of "Digital Games After Climate Change," emphasized the gaming industry's strength in data and metrics, suggesting it is well-positioned to apply these capabilities to sustainability efforts.
Wagner pointed out that unified actions create more efficient and cost-effective solutions for all associated companies and groups. She added that if the gaming industry can pave the way in sustainability, as it has in revenue growth over the last two decades, it could serve as an inspiration for other sectors.
