"Like dog crap" – the reissue of Braid is selling very poorly
On May 14, 2024, Thekla studio released Braid, Anniversary Edition — a reissue of the cult puzzle-platformer. The title's sales were disastrous.
Braid, Anniversary Edition
On streams, the creator of the game, Jonathan Blow, occasionally talked about the sales of the Braid reissue. Recently, a compilation of the developer's statements appeared on the Blow Fan YouTube channel.
Brief Chronology
- May 20. Blow is not entirely happy with the Braid reissue sales but thinks it’s too early to judge.
- June 17. Blow stated that the Braid reissue is selling much better than nostalgic games like Atari 50. Yet the sales still look "like dog's sh*t," and they are extremely insufficient for the studio's survival.
- July 21. At the end of June, the game began selling at a 75% discount, but this did not improve the situation. According to Blow, the sales are still terrible.
- July 22. Blow claims that the game should not have been ported to half the platforms (it was released on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X/S, as well as Nintendo Switch). It sells best on Steam.
- July 27. Blow revealed that due to the game's failure, the studio cannot afford extra expenses. For example, no one is working on the Jai programming language anymore because there’s no money to pay employees. Whether anyone besides Blow is currently working at Thekla, he didn't say.
