Several voice actors from Genshin Impact have openly criticized the game developer MiHoYo, raising concerns about the authenticity of its cultural representation in the game.

Although the regions in Genshin Impact are designed to mirror real-world locations, the latest region, Natlan, has sparked discontent among fans and its English voice actors. Originally meant to draw inspiration from African, Latin American, and Australasian cultures, fans argue that the characters fail to reflect the true diversity of these areas.

"When a game leans heavily on real-world cultures and portrays a character based on the Yoruba supreme god looking like a pale superhero, it's fair to demand proper representation," stated Khoi Dao, who voices Albedo. "Especially when the game pledges to cater to a global audience."

"I encourage fans to continue voicing their concerns, and I hope MiHoYo listens," he added.

Anne Yatco, the voice of Raiden Shogun, emphasized, "I wish a game company would heed valid criticism concerning cultural portrayal, especially when it has been a recurring issue for years."

Valeria Rodríguez, who voices Sucrose, further commented, "I could remain silent to safeguard myself, but as a person of color, we often don't have the luxury to stay quiet when faced with such disrespect, thereby hindering our progress compared to our white peers.

"If real-world deities inspire characters, respect them. If the game draws from authentic cultures, show due respect. I'm all for cultural inspiration and representation, but at the very least, do thorough research and exhibit cultural appreciation."

Rodríguez also compared Genshin Impact's portrayal of the "whitewashed" Yoruba deity Olorun with his depiction in the game Smite. Notably, the deity's name was altered to "Ororon" in English, despite being correctly named "Olorun" in most other languages.

As of now, MiHoYo has not issued any public statements regarding the controversy.
