Piranha Bytes, the studio behind Gothic and Elex, has been closed by its parent company, Embracer.

Despite attempts to find a buyer for the German studio, GameStar reported today that the studio ceased operations at the end of June.

In January, Piranha Bytes acknowledged on their X/Twitter account that they were "in a difficult situation" but urged fans not to give up on them as they searched for a new partner.

There has been no official announcement from either Piranha Bytes or Embracer concerning the closure.

THQ Nordic acquired Piranha Bytes, along with the rights to the Gothic series, in 2019.

Last month, Embracer also closed Pieces Interactive, developers of Alone in the Dark, marking the occasion with a message on their website: "2007 - 2024, Thanks for playing with us."
