Apple has given the green light to the Epic Games Store for iOS following two previous rejections

Epic Games Store has finally received approval from Apple for its notarisation submission after facing two previous rejections.

Currently, developers can release software for iOS outside of the Apple App Store, but it must still pass through Apple’s notary service. Per Apple’s official documentation, this service "scans software for malicious content, checks for code-signing issues, and rapidly returns results to developers."

On July 5, Epic revealed on social media that Apple had twice denied the iOS version of its game store. Apple cited concerns over the similarity between Epic's "Install" button and Apple's "Get" button, as well as labels for in-app purchases.

Epic responded that it was adhering to "standard conventions for buttons on iOS apps" and using "naming practices common across various app stores" to ensure a user-friendly experience for mobile users.

Epic also criticized Apple's rejection as "arbitrary and obstructive," claiming it violated the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The company stated its readiness to launch the Epic Games Store and Fortnite on iOS in the EU, pending no additional obstacles from Apple.

Eventually, Apple approved Epic's notarisation submission. However, Epic noted in a subsequent post that Apple still insisted on user interface changes in future versions, which Epic disputes.

The release of the Epic Games Store and Fortnite is anticipated later this year following the approval of the EU's Digital Markets Act, which permits alternative payment systems and app stores on Apple devices.

In the beginning of the year, Epic criticized Apple for non-compliance with the DMA after its initial attempt to launch on iOS was blocked.

Last month, the European Commission determined that certain Apple policies breached the DMA as they restrict app developers from directing consumers to other channels for offers and content.
