Gameloft Toronto faces significant workforce reductions
Update: Gameloft has verified staff reductions as shared with GamesIndustry.biz. A spokesperson cited market conditions as the reason for the "necessary" workforce decrease.
"As a company, we need to constantly review our production capacities," the statement read. "After careful consideration and in response to the ever-changing market conditions we are facing, it has become necessary to implement a reduction in workforce.
"Unfortunately, this leads us to substantially reduce our production activity in our Toronto studio and to let go some employees of the office. This decision has not been taken lightly, and we understand the impact it may have on affected employees. We will be working with them, on a case-by-case basis, to find the best way to handle their situation."
Original story: Most of Gameloft's Toronto team has reportedly been dismissed, according to GamesIndustry.biz.
Apart from the HR, IT, and management teams, nearly all other staff have been laid off. The 2016 title, Disney Magic Kingdoms, will reportedly move to Gameloft's Kharkiv studio in Ukraine. Around 49 people in Toronto working on Disney Magic Kingdoms have lost their jobs.
Community manager Tasha Huggins mentioned in a LinkedIn post that her last day at Gameloft Toronto was recently.
"As of today, there is a lot of incredible talent that has just entered the market," Huggins noted. "If you are interviewing anyone from the Gameloft Toronto/Disney Magic Kingdoms team, please reach out to me. I would love another opportunity to talk about just how amazing they are."
Reportedly, another project by the Toronto team was canceled post the first phase of layoffs in February.
An additional round of job cuts occurred in April, impacting 40 more employees.
