Infogrames acquires the Surgeon Simulator series from TinyBuild

The Surgeon Simulator franchise has been acquired by Atari's Infogrames label from TinyBuild.

Atari revived its Infogrames label in April with the aim of focusing on titles beyond its main IP lineup. With this revival, Atari also announced the purchase of Totally Reliable Delivery Service, another TinyBuild title.

Developed by Bossa Studios, Surgeon Simulator offers a humorous take on medical operations. The series includes the 2013 original game, the 2016 VR version Surgeon Simulator VR: Meet the Medic, the 2018 Nintendo Switch release Surgeon Simulator CPR, and the 2020 sequel Surgeon Simulator 2: Access All Areas.

Infogrames intends to broaden the availability of these games, explore merchandising possibilities, and consider developing new titles.

"More than 10 years after the release of the original, Surgeon Simulator remains a popular and unique franchise," stated Infogrames manager Geoffroy Châteauvieux. "This was a rare opportunity to acquire a game with a timeless appeal, and we are excited to have Surgeon Simulator within the Infogrames portfolio."

Established in Paris in 1983, Infogrames expanded rapidly in the 1990s and early 2000s through multiple acquisitions. The company licensed the Atari brand in 2003 and rebranded under its name. However, a series of significant losses led to restructuring, cuts, and closures, culminating in the complete acquisition of Atari Inc. Its European distribution division was later sold to Bandai Namco.

In an effort to pivot the brand, Atari's current leadership has concentrated on the surging retro games market, acquiring several studios specializing in remasters and remakes, such as Digital Eclipse and Nightdive Studios. Additionally, Atari has expanded its IP catalogue by acquiring titles from Intellivision, M Network Games, and Stern Electronics.
