Second Wave studio, Challengers Games, ceases operations

Challengers Games has closed its doors, with its recent game Second Wave becoming unavailable as of yesterday.

In a detailed statement posted on the company's website, CEO and studio head Koji Tamura revealed that the Seoul-based company is burdened with debts amounting to ₩2.4 billion (approximately $1.7 million) and is under scrutiny by the Ministry of Labor and Employment.

Tamura mentioned that the firm’s accounts have been frozen and that employees have not received their salaries since March 2024, expressing their hope for a miraculous turnaround.

The shutdown follows financial and developmental challenges with its projects Illang and Second Wave. The latter faced a negative reception upon its Early Access release last month.

"I regret to inform you that Second Wave will likely not continue beyond July due to our inability to afford server costs, leading to an inevitable shutdown," stated Tamura.

He added, "My goal was to succeed with the game, and I apologize for falling short. I am deeply concerned about the unpaid wages and will seek a solution to compensate everyone."

Despite the closure, Tamura hinted at a potential comeback for Challengers Games, stating, "We plan to restart and will provide updates when we are ready."

Customers who acquired Second Wave on Steam will receive refunds, and its Discord channel will be deactivated in July.
