Why I Love: TimeSplitters 2

Why I Love is a series of guest articles on GamesIndustry.biz, where developers share the ways they appreciate each other's contributions. This piece is by Joe Henson, game designer and marketing director at Digital Cybercherries. They recently launched Hypercharge: Unboxed on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.

Reflecting on my game-filled childhood, numerous standout titles come to mind. Among them, one game particularly shines through the passage of time, bringing forth joy and nostalgia whenever I think about it. That game is TimeSplitters 2.

TimeSplitters 2, crafted by Free Radical Design, wasn't known for its deep storyline. Nevertheless, it excelled where others often fell short. It offered a vast range of game modes, from a cooperative story campaign to various competitive multiplayer options, alongside the innovative MapMaker feature.

We were incredibly fortunate with its engaging gameplay, filled with countless unlockables that provided endless entertainment. The experience was indeed a treasure trove of fun, exemplified by characters like the unlockable Gingerbread Man.

TimeSplitters 2's MapMaker allowed players to create custom multiplayer arenas and single-player missions

The game’s array of weapons also deserves special mention. From dual-wielding tommy guns to firing alien energy projectiles, and using traditional grenade launchers and shotguns, each weapon was unique and satisfying to use. This diverse selection never left players short of options, catering to different play styles and settings.

The Virus game mode remains particularly memorable. Simple yet thrilling, it involved one player starting as 'infected,' with others trying to avoid infection for as long as possible. The adrenaline rush of evading pursuers made for an electrifying experience.

In cooperative play, the game also shone brightly. Missions often led to hilarious mishaps, such as an attempt to tail a character without raising suspicion – a task I often complicated with mischief. These moments frequently escalated into friendly duels, replacing cooperation with chaotic yet entertaining battles.

TimeSplitters 2 was more than just a game; it was a well-rounded experience that combined action, customization, and a wide array of modes. This comprehensive design influenced the creation of Hypercharge: Unboxed, where we incorporated varied game modes to offer both nostalgic enjoyment and fresh appeal.

The countless joyful hours it provided have left a lasting impact on my view of games and our design philosophy. TimeSplitters 2 stands as a cherished classic, celebrated for its innovative approach and extensive gameplay options.
