Sumo Group has announced the closure of Timbre Games, signaling a strategic shift within the organization

June 12, 2023: Reports indicate that Sumo Group has decided to shut down Timbre Games.

This development came on the heels of Sumo's announcement to cut down its workforce by 15%, potentially affecting around 250 positions.

The studio's closure wasn't part of the official disclosure, but staff members revealed the news on social media.

"Regrettably, we were informed today that Timbre Games is closing, and our entire studio's incredibly talented and amazing team will be out of work," recruitment coordinator Jenna Dore posted on LinkedIn.

"Working at Timbre has been a true blessing, and I'm extremely grateful for the valuable experience and the wonderful people I've met and loved every day."

Technical director Campbell Dixon commented: "It has been a remarkable journey over the past three years, building this studio from scratch and growing to nearly 100 team members. It breaks my heart that we won't be able to complete our game or showcase the incredible work we've done."

Located in Vancouver, Timbre Games was established in 2021 as an entity under Pipework Studios. Sumo had acquired Pipework Studios for $100 million in September 2020.

Sumo Group confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that Timbre is "impacted" by the current job cuts.

June 13, 2023: Timbre Games formally announced on LinkedIn that the studio will be closing.

"We are heartbroken to announce that Timbre Games Studio is closing, and we must bid farewell to the most skilled, diverse, and amazing team in the gaming industry," the statement said.

"Teams like Timbre are rare, and it is crucial to note that this decision in no way reflects the abilities of our talented, hardworking staff. They have been outstanding. It has been our honor to work with each one of them."
