Balatro sells over 1 million copies: "Even in uncertain times, innovative games can thrive"

Balatro has cemented its status as the fastest-selling game in the history of publisher PlayStack. The hit deck-building roguelike has now surpassed 1 million copies sold globally.

PlayStack and developer LocalThunk shared the news on March 18, saying that Balatro hit the 1 million mark in less than a month after its launch. This includes sales across all platforms: PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.

“I still can’t grasp the response to this game, and I am overjoyed that so many people have been able to have fun with my silly creation,” LocalThunk said in a post on Steam. “I’m so fortunate that I can continue working on my passion as a career.”

PlayStack CEO Harvey Elliott thanked all the players for their support and enthusiasm, adding that “the game’s success is a testament to the quality and creativity that the indie sector can deliver, proving that even in uncertain times, innovative games can thrive.”

Launched on February 20, Balatro became profitable in its first hour and sold over 250k copies in its first 72 hours. In 10 days after its release, the game surpassed 500k units sold across all platforms.

Balatro currently has an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam, with 97% of the 18.6k user reviews being positive. On March 10, it peaked at nearly 37,977 concurrent players, making it the 12th biggest launch of 2024 by that metric.

LocalThunk’s title also ranks 10th in peak CCU among all Steam games with the “Rogue-like” tag, between Warm Snow (44.7k CCU) and Hades (37.7k CCU). When it comes to the “Roguelike Deckbuilder” tag, Balatro is second-only to free-to-play rogue like battle royale Gene Shift Auto, which is not necessary a deck-building game, and above games like Slay the Spire (33k CCU) and Backback Battles (36.5k CCU).
