Scotland is going to support gaming companies
Game developers and publishers will be able to receive support from the Scottish authorities. The government of the country has announced the beginning of work on the creation of a "national gaming strategy".
The Scottish Games Network association, the CodeBase technology incubator and the TechScaler organization, which helps startups with scaling in Scotland, are working together with the authorities on the strategy. The British gaming association UKIE also wants to join the team, but as a leader.
There are no specifics on the content of the strategy yet. The Scottish Games Network said in a statement that it would develop "an action plan that will provide practical, workable recommendations to increase information about and support for games." It is unknown when it will be ready.
"Scotland has a rich heritage in game development, and this industry is full of talented people, innovation and creativity," commented Shona Robison, Deputy First Minister of Scotland, on the decision of the authorities. "The Scottish government recognises the contribution that the industry has already made and its potential to bring additional social, cultural and economic benefits."
The gaming industry annually brings about £188.5 million or $237 million to the Scottish economy. As of 2022, there were more than 140 gaming companies in the country. Among the most famous are Rockstar North, YoYo Games (the author of the GameMaker engine) and Build a Rocket Boy, founded by the former president of Rockstar North.
