Enshrouded hits 1 million players in just four days, peaking at over 160k concurrent players on Steam

It is no secret that Steam players love open world survival games with crafting elements. And the launch of Keen Games’ new title Enshrouded proves that the studio has chosen the right niche.

Enshrouded hits 1 million players in just four days, proving strong interest in survival genre

Keen Games made an announcement on social media, saying that Enshrouded has reached over 1 million players in just four days after its Early Access launch on January 24. Given that it is currently only available on Steam and not on any subscription services (PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions are expected to come out with version 1.0), this is likely indicative of the copies sold.

The studio thanked all the players, adding that it has a lot of plans for the project. “We are looking forward to continuing the development of the game with your support, aiming to make Enshrouded the best game it can be,” the statement reads. “Once again, a heartfelt thank you to everyone!”

Like many of its peers in the genre, Enshrouded is an action survival game with RPG elements, where players have to explore the open world, build bases, craft various items, and fight enemies (and bosses). It currently has a “Very Positive” rating on Steam, with 84% of the 13,093 user reviews being positive. According to SteamDB, it peaked at over 70k concurrent players at launch, eventually reaching 160,405 CCU over the weekend.

This makes it the second-best launch of 2024 on the platform, behind only global phenomenon Palworld (2.1k million concurrent players and over eight million copies sold).

Enshrouded’s metrics are also comparable to other popular Early Access survival games released over the past few years such as:

  • Valheim — 502k CCU;
  • Sons of the Forest — 414k CCU;
  • ARK: Survival Evolved — 248k CCU;
  • Rust — 245k CCU;
  • V Rising — 150k CCU;
  • Raft — 101k CCU;
  • ARK: Survival Ascended — 96k CCU;
  • The Forest — 78k CCU.

What sets Enshrouded apart from many survival titles on Steam is the vast experience of its developer, Keen Games. Founded in 2004, the German studio has dozens of titles in its portfolio, including mobile tower defense game Royal Revolt, Sacred 3, and Portal Knights. The latter is a multiplayer survival action game, for which Keen Games raised $10 million from Tencent and Hiro Capital.
