The number of Tencent's foreign investments in the period from 2014 to 2023 (as of December 5, 2023)
For comparison, Tencent invested 95 times abroad in 2022 and 296 times in 2021.
According to IT Juzi calculations, in 2023, Tencent most often made strategic investments — they accounted for 30% of transactions. She was slightly less active in the Series A funding rounds — 27%. IPOs accounted for 11% of transactions.
Tencent invested in 57% of companies for the first time. Last year, the share of investments in new companies, IT Juzi points out, was 77%.
Note that in April 2023, Financial Times sources claimed that Tencent, on the contrary, is going to actively buy shares in foreign companies. Mainly in European countries. Allegedly, the holding is afraid of excessive control by the Chinese authorities and wants to diversify its portfolio.
