On October 5, CD Projekt held an investor day to discuss the development and launch of Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, as well as the company’s future plans. Here are the key takeaways.
CD Projekt shared highlights from the meeting on its official website, with the full video available on YouTube.
- Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty hit 3 million units sold in its first week, with the base game crossing the 25 million mark (see our separate article for more details).
- Most sales of the expansion came from North America and Europe — 35.9% and 35.1% respectively. Another major region is Asia, accounting for 23.1% of units sold.
- PC accounted for 68% of Phantom Liberty’s sales, of which 10% came from CD Projekt’s own store GOG. When it comes to consoles, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S accounted for 20% and 13% of total sales respectively.
- The development team of Phantom Liberty consisted of 360 CD Projekt employees, with a total of 3,600 involved in the production.
- The company noted that the expansion’s total budget of PLN 370 million ($84.5 million) is preliminary. Final numbers will be shared in the upcoming Q3 report.
- CD Projekt expects Cyberpunk 2077 to become a long-seller, just like The Witcher 3 and its two expansions.
- Overall, the company’s gaming portfolio, which includes The Witcher 1-3 and Cyberpunk 2077, has reached 100 million copies sold globally.
- The Witcher 3 accounts for roughly 50% of it, as the game topped 50 million units sold earlier this year.
- Project Orion, a codename for the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, is currently “at a conceptualization stage.” The game will be developed at the newly established US studio with additional support from the Polish team.
- CD Projekt also plans to develop the IP with transmedia products. It has now partnered with production company Anonymous Content (True Detective, Mr. Robot) to create a live-action project set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe.
- In other news, Adam Kiciński will step down as CEO of CD Projekt on January 1, 2024. He will take on the role of the chief strategy officer (CSO) and become a candidate for the position of the member of the company’s Supervisory Board.
- After that, Adam Badowski and Michał Nowakowski, two executives who has been with CD Projekt for 20 and 18 years respectively, will become joint CEOs.
