Microsoft fined $20 million for collecting data on children
Microsoft will pay a fine of $20 million to settle a lawsuit from the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The lawsuit concerned the violation of the privacy of children in the Xbox ecosystem.
The FTC reported that from 2015 to 2020, Microsoft, without the knowledge and consent of parents, collected personal data of children under the age of 13 who tried to create an Xbox account, but did not complete the registration process. She kept this information for years.
Microsoft explained the situation with a technical glitch. The corporation added that the children’s data obtained in this way has never been used or monetized.
