Jagex has announced the purchase of the American developer Pipeworks Studio
The British studio Jagex, which has been operating the multi-user role-playing game Runescape for two decades, acted for the first time as a buyer of a third-party asset. She acquired the Oregon outsourcer Pipeworks Studio. The latter was responsible for the Terraria ports and helped EA with the last four installments of Madden NFL 22.
The size of the transaction is not specified. However, in 2020, the Sumo Group paid $100 million for the studio. Given the high involvement in Madden NFL, which is one of the central summer releases in the United States every year, it is unlikely that this time the figure for the company, which currently employs 200 people, turned out to be less.
Jagex management has stated that they plan to give Pipeworks Studio access to the Runescape franchise, which, given last year's purchase of Jagex itself by the Carlyle Group, is estimated at at least half a billion dollars.
But not a single purchase. Jagex also noted that it is currently working on a new IP game. There are few details. It is only mentioned that this will be an open-world survival game built on the Unreal Engine 5.
