In 2021, Americans spent $966.8 million on mobile action games. Almost half of the amount went to Genshin Impact
Mobile action games are the fastest—growing genre at the box office in the USA. The analytical company Sensor Tower estimated that in 2021 their total revenue jumped by 68.9% year-on-year. Other genres had more modest growth rates.
The main thing from the report
- In total, American gamers spent $966.8 million on mobile action games last year. They left the most money in Genshin Impact — $406.3 million. Marvel Contest of Champions and Dragon Ball Legends also entered the top three in terms of player spending.
- The second genre in terms of the growth rate of the box office was hyper casual games — 43.1%. Americans spent over $111 million in them.
- The third place was taken by board games. In 2021, the expenses of US users in them increased by 35.4% to $772.5 million.
- But the revenue of racing and geolocation AR-games decreased, albeit slightly. Americans spent 3.8% less in mobile racing than a year earlier, and 5.8% less in geolocation AR games.
- Despite the huge increase in revenue from action games, puzzles became the highest-grossing mobile genre of the year in the United States. In 2021, they earned $5.1 billion. Puzzles are followed by casinos ($4.8 billion) and strategies ($4.3 billion).
- The number of downloads decreased for all mobile genres in the USA. Casinos (39.3%), shooters (31.5%) and puzzles (23.1%) had the biggest drop.
- Sports games suffered the least — their downloads decreased by 2.5% to 141.2 million. The leaders in downloads in this genre were 8 Ball Pool, Retro Bowl and Madden NFL 22.
