Epic Games announces Unreal Editor for Fortnite, coming on March 22

What is Unreal Editor for Fortnite?

On March 16, Epic Games shared a short teaser on Twitter announcing the release date for Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN).

The beta version of the PC-only application will become available to all players on the Epic Games Store on March 22.

UEFN is based on the Fortnite Creative toolset, but adds new Unreal Engine 5 features and capabilities. It should help creators develop and publish new content, including their own games and experiences, and test new islands in real-time across PC and consoles.

What features does UEFN have?

  • The beta version of the Unreal Engine for Fortnite app will allow players to use modeling tools, design gameplay, create VFX effects, build landscapes, as well as import meshes, textures, and audio.
  • Users will also be able to create animations using Control Rig and Sequencer, discover and import Unreal Engine assets, and use the Live Edit tool to collaborate with others.
  • With this announcement, Epic Games wants to give creators more powerful tools but keep the development process simple. For example, UEFN will support a new programming language called Verse.
  • All games and experiences created with UEFN will be published directly to the Fortnite platform and will be available to both PC and console players.
  • “UEFN combines the creation tools from Fortnite Creative with the Unreal Editor, enabling Unreal Engine creators to develop content for Fortnite using a familiar interface,” Epic Games said.
