GameDataCrunch: how does a new website that collects and analyzes data about games work
A new GameDataCrunch project has appeared on the network, which collects data about games in one place based on third-party sites and open sources. The service does not provide information about sales, but gives access to metrics by which you can roughly judge the degree of success of different games.Who is behind the project?
The GameDataCrunch website was launched by Lars Doucet, co-founder of the Level Up Labs studio.
The company is best known for the Defender’s Quest series of games. Doucet himself previously worked on SteamLabs, but now insists that his new project has nothing to do with Valve.
Where is the data collected from?GameDataCrunch uses open information from Steam, and also collects data from third-party analytical and statistical sites like SteamDB, SteamCharts and Metacritic;
- most of these services focus only on certain metrics.
- The Lars project collects relevant information from all sources and groups the data obtained;Doucet calls the focus on facts and verified information the main feature of GameDataCrunch.
- That is why the site does not provide estimates of sales, because it cannot accurately calculate them;at the same time, Lars is confident that the data obtained on GameDataCrunch will be enough to assess the success of a certain project by comparing several metrics and comparing them with other games;
- now the project collects data only about games from Steam.
- However, the team plans to track information from EGS, GOG, as well as Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Xbox console stores.Statistics of The Witcher 3 in GameDataCrunch
How does GameDataCrunch work?
To get data about a particular game, it is enough to type its name into the search bar.
All information is divided into several groups:
- performance: the number of ratings (total and in the first week), the peak number of simultaneous players, the number of subscribers on Steam, the position in the charts, etc.;critics’ reviews: ratings on Metacritic and Opencritic, as well as a special subcategory of “hidden diamonds”, which includes highly rated games with a relatively small audience;
- Positions Among Us in various categories
similarity with other projects: games with similar tags and the percentage of users from the target audience of a particular game who have already left feedback on the selected project;
- categories: position among all projects with similar tags and among certain categories of games (single, multiplayer, cooperative, etc.).
- Top Steam games by number of subscribers
All data in GameDataCrunch for each game is provided in the context of: how many days it is on sale, what is its status (release, beta or early access), distribution model, average and lowest price, information about sales, etc.
Also on GameDataCrunch you can see information on all new releases, the most successful and popular games, as well as titles in specific categories. The information in the database is updated every day at midnight GMT.
