The creators of Alien: Blackout closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic

Rival Games studio, which created Alien: Blackout, has closed in Finland. Due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the developer’s partnership agreements and negotiations with publishers broke down.

“I was full of optimism, said Jukka Laakso, former CEO of Rival. — But something happened that neither I nor the whole world were ready for: a global crisis in the form of a coronavirus. We were left with nothing.”

At the same time, the management does not blame the coronavirus for the closure of the studio at all. Rival Games turned out to be bankrupt after a number of events: first, one of its upcoming projects was canceled by Universal Studios, and layoffs took place in the studio. Rival then tried to find investors and a third-party publisher, but failed. In addition, her income all this time was “not serious,” according to Laakso.

Mobile Alien: Blackout is Rival’s main project and one of the few games in the Alien franchise that has been highly praised by critics and players. For seven years, the studio has also released Thief of Thieves: Season One and The Detail for Steam and smartphones.
