Japanese developer COLOPL announces monthly allowance for all employees to offset impact of inflation

COLOPL, best known for its mobile free-to-play RPG White Cat Project, has decided to help its employees cope with global price hikes. The company will start providing a monthly allowance throughout the year.

What happened?

  • On December 12, COLOPL CEO and president Takashi Miyamoto announced the launch of the “Special Inflation Support Allowance” program.
  • Starting this month, all team members, including full-time employees and contractors, will start receiving a monthly allowance of ¥10,000 ($77.8). This will amount to ¥120,000 ($934.3) per year.
  • The company noted that it wants to “ensure that employees can live and work with peace of mind in the face of the continuing global price hikes and the weak yen.”
  • As of September 2022, COLOPL employed 780 people.
  • According to Teikoku Databank, 6.6% of Japanese companies have already started paying inflation allowances to their employees, with 26.4% saying they are working on such programs. However, 63.7% of employers have no plans to provide monthly bonuses.
  • Japanese companies are now paying ¥6,500 ($50.6) per month on average. So COLOPL’s monthly allowance is 1.5 times the average in the country.

Who are COLOPL?

  • Founded in 2008, COLOPL is focused on developing mobile games. Its portfolio includes titles like Quiz RPG: The World of Mystic Wiz, Shironeko Tennis, Pro Baseball VS, and The Blue Sky of Sanguozhi.
  • According to AppMagic, the company’s game catalog has reached over $2 billion in revenue and generated over 50 million downloads. It is worth noting that Japan accounts for almost 100% of all revenue.
