Cliff Blesinski: “AAA blockbusters are expensive and unpredictable”
Game designer Cliff Bleszinski believes that high-budget AAA titles are leading the gaming industry to a dead end.
According to him, the AAA segment has turned into “a category of 8 games that are repeated over and over again.” Millions of dollars are spent on creating and promoting projects of this class, so developers prefer not to take risks with the launch of new franchises.
Blesinski added that not all gamers are willing to pay $ 60 dollars for an AAA game, and even more so – to buy several such games a year.
“You shouldn’t rely on blockbusters unless you’re Sony, Activision or 2K,” Cliff Blesinski said.
As an alternative, the game designer recommends developers to move into a segment that he calls AA and describes as “games with good graphics, gameplay and a planned approach to budget and marketing.”
Blesinski considers Warframe, Rocket League and Rust to be successful examples of AA titles, which use the frituple model and are distributed mainly in the form of digital copies.
Cliff Blesinski also said that he is currently working on a VR project and is trying to get enough funding for it. Which is not easy, since investors are too cautious about investing in new technology.
Cliff Blesinski is a game designer best known for his work on the Unreal and Gears of War series at Epic Games. In 2014, he co-founded Boss Key Productions studio.
