CD Project RED promised not to abuse the trademark “Cyberpunk”
Polish studio CD Project RED reported that it registered the word “Cyberpunk” as a trademark solely for the sake of protecting the rights to its own project “Cyberpunk 2077”.
The company promised not to start patent wars against any use of this term. CD Project RED said they just don’t want to buy the trademark from someone who borrowed it for resale.
A publication with explanations appeared on the studio’s Twitter.
The developer emphasizes that trademarks do not include genres or settings, they only cover naming conventions. In other words, CD Projekt Red may require compliance with the trademark only if the potential creator of the game wants to call it “Cyber Punk”, or something like that.
Cyberpunk 2077 is an action game with elements of a role—playing game developed by the Polish company CD Projekt RED since 2012. The release date is still unknown.
