Baidu has sold its mobile gaming business for $173 million

China’s Baidu Corporation has confirmed the sale of its mobile game publisher Baidu Mobile Game (BMG) to two unnamed companies for $173 million.

Rumors of a sale deal appeared in January of this year.

Baidu Mobile Game was formed in August 2013 after Baidu acquired 91 Wireless, one of the country’s largest Android app stores, for $1.8 billion. As part of BMG, Baidu planned to create a new team of mobile game developers from employees of 91 Wireless and its “daughter” Duokoo, as well as a new division for the distribution of mobile titles under its own brand.

It is not yet known whether Baidu intends to completely abandon mobile games, or whether the corporation is clearing the site for a new project.
