“Can we be the number one engine? I don't think. But we can be a strong competitor”: CryEngine about its place in the market

“We have a big team that has decided to improve workflows, the way [the engine] looks and feels,” says George. – “We want it to be easier for any developer to take up development on it.”

Crytek is now focused on expanding its user base.

Moreover, the company focuses not on working with large teams known for working with CryEngine, but on small ones, including indie developers.

“Our task is to show them that [CryEngine] is not just a powerful, high-performance engine, but also accessible to the masses (and not only in terms of price and business model)”, – emphasizes George.

The price model of the engine is now as follows: pay as much as you want (at least $ 0). Crytek does not take any percentages from sales, it does not issue subscriptions. Scotto believes that with the increase in the number of projects on the engine, along with its development, users will start paying themselves.

To be “closer to the masses” Crytek has also implemented a C# interface. After that, several developers even transferred their projects from Unity to CryEngine.

George calls the main problem in popularizing the engine problems in working with the community and the lack of open documentation. Now the company is actively working on this.

“This is a big priority for us. We are increasing the team that works on documentation with the engine team so that the documents are not only easy to read, but also so that there are no errors in them,” says George. By the way, Crytek is also engaged in shooting video tutorials.

Scotto says that CryEngine is not interested in direct competition with Unity and Unreal. But he immediately notes that the company is “focused on increasing its market share. To do this, we are reducing the entry threshold and improving the user experience. Can we be the number one engine? I don’t think. But we can be a strong competitor.”
