How to make a game if you draw badly?

One of the Reddit readers asked the community how to make an indie game if you don’t know how to draw. We tell you what came of it.

draw

The user krazykhris875 told that he is making a game from scratch. The history of the project is as follows:

“Two years ago, I worked at Walmart (an American chain of hypermarkets, – approx. editors) with two other guys who also wanted to make a game. We started putting together a project on Unity, and even though we came up with different cool things for the game together, at some point there was a feeling that only I was doing something here.

I guess it’s partly my fault, too, that they didn’t do anything. I don’t know, maybe I was pushing or something. In the end, they came to nothing. And the project is now completely mine. The root gameplay is quite simple, and I have already created it (although in the process I had to relearn how to work on Unity, and I will probably rebuild the game again … again). So I want to bring it all to mind.

The main thing that bothers me is that I’m a fig artist. I’m already tired and tired of drawing for the game, and still nothing comes out in the end, at least for now. I know that I need to finish the game already, even if it will be all squares, and then I will find an artist who will be interested in the project. But do you know how difficult it is to motivate yourself to work on a bunch of squares?

So, dear developers, especially those who are more into programming, what to do if you don’t know how to draw and there is no artist?”

Some commentators took the opportunity to make a joke, but others gave useful advice.

khalkeus3d user shared several solutions to choose from at once:

  • learn to draw (long, but inexpensive);
  • find resources with free or inexpensive art (from the editors: here we have collected six such sites);
  • hire an artist, and collect the money to pay him through kickstarter;
  • to find a person who will draw “for interest” (editor’s note: don’t do that. In this article, VC examines in detail why. We agree with our colleagues).

badcomedian_keyboardThe Orava commentator gave a link to a self-developed “polygon editor”. The program allows, according to the author, to create assets for games from scratch, both flat and three-dimensional.

Chillerchatter advised to create your own style in drawing: “So you can pretend to be a good artist.”

And finally, a user under the nickname Vasebbit recommended not to pay attention to the pictures at all: “Take monochrome sprites. If the game is interesting, then you will add art later.”
